Auckland Fair market money

I was asked to design the market money for the latest Auckland Fair. After a few false starts I settled on a dense jungle image, the Fair is somewhat like a jungle but instead of there being a huge variety of plants and animals there is a huge variety of arts and crafts on offer.

The initial image was in indian ink.

Which I then digitally coloured for the $5 and $10 versions.

The organiser added the circle to my design as she thought that the denomination wasn't obvious enough. Or maybe it was so I wouldn't print out my own to cash in - license to print money!

New card designs!

I sometimes like to make some new designs before I order another batch of cards from the printer, these two are my latest offerings. I'll get them up on my etsy and felt stores soon!
The top one was inspired by my recent dinosaur in a helmet comic for Three Words, animals are funnier when wearing protective head gear. I used to ride carefree with the wind in my hair but these days I'm more scared of cracking my noggin (Auckland drivers are infamously terrible), so safety first is the message!
The bottom one I have nicknamed 'the cat's revenge'. If house cats swelled to megafauna size would they be friendly and remember all the pats and food we gave them? Or would they remember us laughing at their clumsy antics, when they fell off chairs or forgot that their tongues were hanging out. Or when we made them dance by holding their arms or put things on their heads when they were half asleep and then took photos of them.
Something to think about.

Funfair

Here are some shots from the Auckland Fair on Sunday, I actually remembered to get my loyal helper to take some shots. I was pretty much glued to the table all day so didn't get a chance to have a look around (except to run after the lady who was giving away free scones at the end of the day).
Thanks to everyone who came along and bought a thing or just picked up a business card. If you saw something that you like but didn't buy it you can get most things off my etsy shop and I have my cards on my felt shop too but haven't put my new cards up yet. Or just send me a message (sophieoiseau AT gmail DOT com) and I'll sort you right out.

Market Moolah

I can finally share my design for the Auckland Fair's market money which I did way back in September. This year they have $10 notes as well as the usual $5. There's such an abundance of cool stuff at the fairs, I wanted to convey that hence the dense jungle.
I'll put up more images of it once the fair has passed (to thwart any potential forgers out there), it's on the 7th of Dec from 11am to 3pm at Shed 10 in the Viaduct, come on down!

Cameo-yo

Yet again I have some works in Seed Gallery's xmas-y show (30 artists are given 10 identical wooden items to artify). This years shape is the delightful cameo oval. Here's a sneak peek at some of my arts, the exhibition opens tonight at 6pm and is up until the 6th of December.

Three Words

I'm super delighted and excited to announce that I will have some work in Three Words, an upcoming anthology of female cartoonists in New Zealand. You can find out more about it on the Three Words blog or facebook page.
The comic I submitted is sort of about a dinosaur wearing a helmet, I won't put it up here now but here are some images which didn't make the final edit. Had fun using watercolours for a change!

It turns out my idea of a dinosaur looks pretty much like an aligator but without the nose and eye bumps...oh well.

Remembrance poppies.

I drew these poppies after hearing the sad news of a friends passing. Sam was a supremely talented musician and writer (music here, blog here) and we miss him and his hearty laugh and emphatic storytelling dearly.

Auckland Fair 2014

I'll be back flogging my wares at the newly renamed (formerly Auckland Art and Craft Fair) Auckland Fair. I have a special contribution to the fair this year, more on that later but in the meantime here's me fumbling my way through some interview questions.

ZINE-ZINE-ZINE

I've made an instructional zine zine for the Auckland Storylines, where I'll be on Sunday, teaching the kids how to zine, more info on that here. I'll also put the pages up here if anyone wants to print em out and make them yourself, just at a time that I'm not running out the door!

Scout the slugger

Here's a little birthday painting I did for a good friend of her cat re-imagined as a boxing champ.
He's a tough guy with a heart of gold and an excellent withering look (see below).

Celeryman

It's National Poetry Day so in honour of this occasion I'm releasing the master copy of my Celeryman poem (actually called Mr Celery but I'm renaming it Celeryman). Print it out and make your own! But please don't sell them, thanks!

Storylines & workshops

I'll be hosting some workshops at the end of the month, the first is aimed loosely at 8-12 year olds and is a drawing class about giving characters emotions through their poses and facial expressions, I realised I put a lot of effort into this with my characters so hope to pass on some of these skills. This one is at the Papatoetoe library from 2.30-4pm on Saturday the 30th of August and costs $25, more on the workshop here.

The second will be at the Auckland Storylines Family Day on Sunday the 31st of August at the Aotea Centre. I'll be hosting a zine making workshop for kids and we'll have lots of materials to cut and paste and a photocopier and everything! This will be a going all day (10am-3pm) and is free.
There is lots of other great stuff happening at the Storylines Family Days (which are nationwide) and fun things for kids, so if you have young folk you should come on down.

Updating le shop

I'm so looking forward to summer that I've started a studio spring clean, by which I mean that I've taken some photos of stuff and put it on my etsy for sale. So if you want to help out my painfully slow pace of tidying up you can by buying something from here. I'll put my zines up there soon too.

Here are some things you could buy!

Ananas

A commission for a friend as part of my fundraising  for my cat's vet bills, he wanted a pineapple. I think he's taking the bottom one (did two versions cos I wanted to see what it looked like with yellow behind the blue), so I'll probably put the other one on my etsy, if anyone is keen...

Friday 11 July 2014

On the world wide web

So I've updated my Etsy shop with some originals for sale, will get my new prints up there any day now. Also I now have a Behance profile which you can check out here.

Art sale for sick cat

As I have previously mentioned my cat Shorty is sick with cystitis, after giving her lots of different pills it turns out she is going to have to have an operation. We have pet insurance but it only covers 70% of the costs and it's all broken down into weird brackets so we can't actually claim the full 70% of all the costs of her treatment. So to try to raise some funds I'm having a 2 week sale with 40% off my older digital prints and 25% off my screenprints, and free p&p in NZ. You can see all the works for sale on my facebook here or on my etsy
Might chuck some original works up for sale too, keep yr eyes peeled

In healthier times.

Zinefest + cystitis

I'm chuffed as to announce that I'll be at the upcoming Auckland Zinefest.
I was going to do a fanzine about the old movies my pal & I watch but got sidetracked by my cat's medical drama and am now doing a tragi-comic zine about her recent cystitis.
More on the AKZF here, and here it the poster by the talented Lucy Meyle

Fair enough

So I survived another Auckland Art and Craft Fair, thanks to everyone who stopped by, even if it was just to giggle/guffaw at my Animal Power lions or Zombie Resume. As per usual I didn't get any snaps of my stall but here's one that Ellie of Extra Curricular took.

I had some new giclee prints available too, here is a terrible photo of them ready to be editioned.

Once I get some better photos of them I will put them on my etsy so y'all can buy them, or you can send me a message on my facebook page.

Update #2

Also there is an interview with me on the Auckland Art & Craft Fair blog here

Update

Well it's been a wee while. I've been very busy but aren't quite ready to announce what it is that I've been working on, so am going to be all annoying and secretive and just say 'watch this space'.
In other news I got a lovely write up over on the Extra Curricular blog, check it out here

Latest cards fresh from the printer

Here's my new Seal of Approval design in print, just need to get envelopes for it then it'll be ready to go. I also changed the colours on my Best Wishes card to freshen it up too. I'll be putting these on my online store (and shops around Auckland) soon.

Wednesday 7 May 2014

Just a little painting for fun, still love drawing and painting bats.

Ramp it up

I was delighted to be asked by the lovely people at Ramp Gallery in Hamilton to send down some zines for their Small Press exhibition, a "survey of some of the best Australiasian fanzines from recent years" according to their website. Here's the link to the facebook event where you can find all the details and here's a link to some info on the upcoming hamilton zinefest.

Sup dog

Here's a recent commission for a friend, based on my Hello dog card design. Sausage dog demonstrates his stretchiness again.

Seal of Approval x 2

This is my latest card design, the Seal of Approval, haw haw. I initially wasn't happy with the first design so I did another one, but then I added some detail to the sea and now I like him better, I'd be keen to know which one other people like though. Seals are pretty fun to paint, great for drybrush.

Red Dish

Happy Easter everyone, here's one of my egg paintings from the Hot X Buns exhibition.

Explorerer

I had a wee job for a friend to do an image of a female explorer with a giant magnifying glass. As I always really like getting an inside view into other peoples process I thought I'd include my process sketches too.
